Those roses under my window make no reference to former roses or to better ones; they are for what they are...There is no time to them. There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Goals Update

I'm going to update my goals from over 7 months ago to see where I stand, which ones I need to drop, which ones I want to add, and what things I have accomplished.

1. Get accepted to Teach For America
I did get accepted to teach high school chemisty in Memphis, but I got an offer from a great charter school in Boston at the same time. The pull of going home, teaching something I wanted to teach, and learning how to teach for a year was enough to help me decide that Teach For America was not for me. Still love the program, and still proud of myself for getting accepted. But I know the position I chose will prepare me to be the best possible teacher. And it'll be nice to be in Boston!

2. Pull off an Education Week that everyone on campus knows about and most people attend
We pulled off Education Week. It was definitely a success, but not quite as large as I had hoped for. I hope we laid the groundwork so that it becomes a yearly event.

3. Finish the Philadelphia Marathon
Chronic shin splints prevented this one. BUT I did run a relatively successful cross country season, and I have my eyes set on a marathon in Vermont in May. I'm just starting the training, and if I'm feeling good by the end of February, I will sign up!

4. Win the Williamson Medal
This would be great, obviously. But I'm starting to realize that it probably won't happen.

5. Graduate 1st in my class
Still hoping for this. Even with Stat.

6. Get honors on my thesis from the American Studies department
Ugh. My thesis. I'm writing about the images of teachers portrayed in popular films and NCLB. Or about what the two products are asking us to 'buy' about education. I'm hopelessly behind.

7. Write an education op-ed
Haven't done it yet. Although I did write my Junto paper about school segregation, but that's about the closest I've gotten.

8. Write more consistently in a journal
Fail. I'm trying to use this as a quasi-journal too. And I carry it with me. I just haven't been writing.

9. Find closure in my relationship/non-relationship with my high school boyfriend
Eh.

10. Use my Marshall grant to go abroad
CHECK! Went to Ghana!

11. Feel good about my eating and exercise habits
Constant battle.

12. Thank everyone who deserves to be thanked for making my time at F&M what it is/was
I have a list going.

13. Write memoir like entries of my time at F&M
Nope.

14. Graduate sad but excited
Yesterday marked 100 days until graduation, and I definitely feel both.

15. Learn more about mom and dad
Hasn't really happened yet. Not sure how to go about it without being awkward.

16. Form opinions about education that I am proud to stand behind
I'm getting there. I'm proud of myself for how much I'm learning.

17. Plan a trip with mom
Might not happen anytime soon. I need to save money.

18. Go to First Friday
I still haven't done this! And I can't go tomorrow because it's recruitment, so I'll have to make an effort in March.

19. Buy a really great pair of jeans
I have a couple OK pairs of jeans. And a cool pair of green leggings that I love.

So overall, not doing terribly. Things to add:

20. Finish my 30 before 30 list
21. Write down the most important moments/decisions from college
22. Shop at Central Market more
23. Figure out where I'm going to live in the fall
24. Write at least one post a day!

100 Days Until Graduation

Today marks 100 days until graduation. I'm more than halfway through senior year, which is crazy. I didn't even realize I had posted those goals on the blog, but I'm happy to say I'm not doing half bad. I'll have to do a post where I check in on them.

I want to post something everyday from now until graduation. That's 100 posts.

I can document my training for (maybe) my first marathon in May, keep track of some of those goals, and give myself something to remember my last 100 days at F&M by. And maybe even tell some people I keep a blog so that they can read it. Big maybe on that one.
